Automattic Acquires Frontity

On August 30, 2021, Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and WooCommerce, officially acquired Frontity, the open-source React framework designed for headless WordPress setups. The Frontity team, including founders Pablo Postigo and Luis Herranz, will now dedicate their expertise to enhancing the Gutenberg editing experience and developer tooling.

Decoupled Expertise Meets WordPress Core

Frontity, launched in 2019 by a team based in Spain, brought a powerful React-driven approach to building headless WordPress sites. Its server-side rendering and performance-centric features quickly gained traction in the JAMstack community. Automattic had already backed Frontity in a €1 million investment round in 2020; this acquisition formalizes the partnership.

Under Automattic’s banner, the Frontity team will channel their experience into core WordPress development. They will:

  • Focus on enhancing the Gutenberg block editor and full site editing (FSE) developer experience
  • Contribute to front-end tooling, performance optimizations, and UX improvements
  • Apply learnings from decoupled architectures to refine WordPress APIs and block/theme development.

Community-Led Open Source Continuity

Automattic has confirmed that Frontity will remain a community-driven, open-source framework. The team has stabilized the project, resolved key bugs, and documented ongoing feature work before shifting focus. This ensures developers using Frontity for decoupled projects can continue with confidence.

Community contributors are encouraged to:

  • Maintain and innovate within Frontity’s ecosystem
  • Explore integrations with Gutenberg and FSE components
  • Enhance the framework’s performance and extensibility

With Frontity evolving into a community-maintained project, the Apache of headless WordPress remains available free of charge.

Why This Shapes WordPress Development

Automattic’s acquisition of Frontity underscores its commitment to making WordPress a leading CMS and a developer-centric platform. By bringing React and headless expertise in-house, Automattic aims to:

  • Improve block theme creation, previews, and editing workflows
  • Incorporate modern frontend patterns from decoupled frameworks into Gutenberg
  • Strengthen WordPress as a top-tier development platform with developer-friendly APIs and UX

This move signals the growing importance of FSE and React-driven experiences within the WordPress ecosystem.

Joining the Journey Toward Richer Editing Tools

Frontity’s involvement significantly bolsters Automattic’s “Five for the Future” initiative, which is dedicated to corporate contributions to the WordPress core. With this acquisition, Automattic appointed a new head of developer relations and is sponsoring influential contributors like Birgit Pauli‑Haack for projects like Gutenberg Times.

As Automattic’s resources and talent pool grow, the broader WordPress ecosystem gains from increased focus on developer usability, editorial workflows, and integration capabilities.

A New Chapter for WordPress Development

Frontity’s integration into Automattic marks a maturation point for Gutenberg and full site editing tools. With React and headless insights now embedded in the core contributors’ ranks, WordPress stands to become more modular, performant, and tailored to modern web development standards. While Frontity will continue under community care, its foundational ideas will shape WordPress’s future UX and developer interface.
