Awesome Motive, the company behind some of WordPress’s most popular plugins, has announced its acquisition of Duplicator, a freemium backup and migration plugin with over 1.5 million users. This marks Awesome Motive’s first acquisition of 2023, strengthening its suite of nearly 20 commercial plugins.
About Duplicator
Launched 12 years ago, Duplicator is a versatile tool that enables users to back up, migrate, copy, move, or clone WordPress sites with ease. Its commercial licenses range from $49/year to $299.50/year, making it a valuable resource for developers and website owners.
What This Means for Users
Snapcreek co-founders Bob Riley and Cory Lamle, creators of Duplicator, are stepping away to pursue other ventures. However, the rest of the development team will remain onboard under the leadership of John Turner at Awesome Motive.
In a farewell post, Riley assured users that Awesome Motive would stay true to Duplicator’s existing roadmap:
“We’ve shared our extensive feature wishlist, and we’re confident that Awesome Motive’s resources will make it a reality much faster.”
While no immediate pricing changes are planned, some users have voiced concerns about Awesome Motive’s marketing practices, which include admin dashboard upsells and ads.
A Strategic Addition to Awesome Motive’s Portfolio
The acquisition of Duplicator adds a reliable backup and migration solution to Awesome Motive’s extensive plugin portfolio, which includes OptinMonster, WPForms, MonsterInsights, and AIOSEO. This move aligns with the company’s mission to deliver comprehensive tools for WordPress users to grow and manage their websites.
Looking Ahead
With this acquisition, Awesome Motive aims to enhance Duplicator’s features and bring faster innovation to its user base. “We’re excited to continue developing Duplicator and providing users with the tools they need to manage their WordPress sites efficiently,” said John Turner, leader of the Duplicator team under Awesome Motive.
